Software Download

This page contains links for downloading all the software needed to run this applet, regardless of your operating system.

Please note that I am not responsible for the correctness of the URLs given below. If I have made errors, or if URLs are otherwise incorrect, please notify me. I will try to help, but cannot guarantee anything.

Java Environment

If you don't already have one, you'll need a Java Runtime Environment (Java Virtual Machine) for your operating system. Choose the correct one for your hardware/software platform:

If you cannot view the display

If you are a Windows user and are unable to view the displays on this site, the reason (as we have observed from dealing with many similar cases, is invariably connected with the failings of what Microsoft calls its "Great Software", and its efforts to undermine the Java language in order to perpetuate its near-total monopoly. There are two general ways to deal with the problem:

Download a functioning copy of Java

See the links above, under Java Environment, for Sun Microsystems, or ....

Download a GEDCOM viewer

If you prefer, you can download a viewer which will display the trees on your Windows system, and which will not require the presence of a Java environment. The display will not be interactive in the same sense as the Website display, and will not be as intuitive. It will require you to have the GEDCOM database on your machine, so that you will not see the updates of new information that I apply at least weekly, unless you download the database from time to time.

To go this route, you should download the data file(s) in which you are interested: clan.zip, or ismach.zip, or hertzman.zip. Each of these includes, in addition to the respective GEDCOM file, also a smaller auxiliary file used by the applet, which you can discard. Below are links to three freeware GEDCOM viewers. I am not familiar with their operation, and am not responsible for how they function for you; I cannot support them. If there is a demand for shareware viewers (the prices of which are in the US$20 - 30 range), I will add links to such programs.
