What is this database?
This database contains a family now called Hertzman, which was called Hertanu
when its founders immigrated to Canada near the beginning of the twentieth century.
It is connected to the Main database by the marriage of one of its members, Herscu
Hertanu/Hertzman, to Paulina Hertanu, who appears in the Main database. The fact
that both spouses were Hertanus was deceptive, and I believed originally that the
two families were somehow linked further back in time. I no longer believe this.
Still, it was my acquaintance with the family that led me to Paulina and her descendants,
and members of the family have been very supportive of my efforts; so, for the time
being, this database remains.
Instructions
It will take a minute or so for the applet to load, after which you will see three
buttons, labelled "Tree", "Table" and "Timeline" at
the bottom of the page , representing the three views in which the database can
be displayed. You are not limited to a single choice, but can request both Tree
and Table views, by clicking on both these buttons. The great advantage here is
that you can choose, e.g., to see Table and Tree views simultaneously, and used
in conjunction with each other, making it extremely easy to focus the Tree
View on any given person; see the paragraph below.
If you have a dial-up connection, you need not remain online once the
applet is loaded; you can disconnect and use it without incurring Internet or
telephone charges.
If your browser does not support Java 1.1.6 or better, nothing will happen. If
your system does not support Java 1.1.6 or better, you may download
the necessary software to remedy this situation. If you are in doubt about what
to do, please contact me. .
Tell me what operating system, what version of Java, if any,
and what browser you are using. Comments are also most welcome,
and any corrections and additions to the tree are
solicited. In particular, if you believe your family is connected
with ours, but you do not find it in the tree, please Contact me .
The Table View
The Table View is a list showing the name of each person, and the
date and place of birth of each where known. You can change the width of the columns
by dragging the partitions between the column headings. You can sort the list in
ascending or descending order by clicking on the title of the column according to
which you wish to sort. You can focus the Tree View on any person
by clicking on that person's entry in the Table View. on the name
of any given person, the Tree View will be focussed upon that person.
Fams. After you have clicked this button, you can click on a marriage to see
the place associated with it, if it is known. For example, you can note the ID of
the husband or the wife (when the table shows individuals), then switch to the family
table, sort the table by husband or wife as appropriate, and see the details of
the marriage.
You can return to the list of persons by pressing the Indis button. Other
buttons of this row are not in use at present.
The Tree View
The Tree View shows individuals and families as a family tree. Spouses
reside beside each other, descendants are grouped below and ancestors above. Name,
sex, and dates pertaining to an individual are displayed within his box; the date
of foundation of a family is shown in the small box connecting the two spouses.
There is a control to adjust the Zoom level of the display, in increments of
10%. When the display first comes up on your display, it will be at 100%, the closest
zoom. It's a good idea to set zoom at the smallest number at which the texts remain
readable on your screen.
Navigating the tree
One individual will be shown with a colored frame; this person is at that moment
the origin of the tree. Only his spouse, his descendants, and his
ancestors will be visible. To view e.g. the families of his siblings, click on one
of his parents, which will become the origin of the tree, and the siblings will
become visible, and you can click on any one of them, or on his spouse, to show
the desired part of the tree. If, instead of the parents, you had chosen a more
remote ancestor, you would have been able to see even more of the tree. In this
way, you can move from any part of the tree to any other.
Click on the Bookmarks button to bring the Tree View to a portion
of the family in which you are interested.
In the Options menu you can choose to activate the Overview view, which gives a
general view of the tree with the focus centered as you have placed it currently.
This view can be used for rapid navigation. The grey box indicates what the Tree
view contains; you can drag it about to make various areas appear in the Tree
View. You can also click on any region in the Overview to make it appear
in the Tree View.
The Timeline View
The Timeline View shows the time sequence of all known birth, marriage,
and death events in the database. As in the case of other two views, its focus can
be placed on any given individual by clicking on that person in any view.
Suggestions
I usually use only the Tree and Table views. Below is the layout that I
find most useful, occupying the entire screen area. Notice the Overview across the
bottom of the screen. You can resize and move the various windows as you wish, of
course, perhaps devoting more space to the Tree at the expense of the Table. Drag
the grey rectangle of the Overview about to view different portions of the tree
that is shown in the Overview.
